1909 Robert Tullis was promoted captain in Territorial Force in March.

1914 At the outbreak of war the 7th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders was at Stirling.  It was training at Bedford by 1 December and moved to Southampton en route for France on the 11th.  The battalion sailed on the 16th on SS Tintoretto and landed at Le Havre the following day.  By 31st December the battalion had moved to Helfaut and Bilques and was still busy training.

1915 From 6 January the battalion was stationed at Nieppe, part of the 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Division.  The battalion was granted a period of familiarisation training until the start of the Second Battle of Ypres on 22nd April in which the Germans used poison gas for the first time.  The battalion, moved from billets near Bailleul, and took part in the Battle of St Julien on 25th April suffering heavy casualties. It was in action again several times further until the Second Battle of Ypres officially ended on 25th May.  On the 24th May, the first day of the Battle of Bellwaarde, the battalion suffered a serious gas attack in which more than 200 men were affected.  Captain Tullis was wounded in the head and died the following day in hospital at Bailleul without regaining consciousness.  By the 25th May only 5 officers and 84 men remained with the colours and 4 days later the 7th and 9th Battalions, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were temporarily organized into a composite battalion.
