Military Service

Smith arrived In France on 8th July 1915 presumably as part of a draft for the 1st Battalion which had been serving in the 1st Brigade, 1st Division since September 1914.  He would have been in time to take part in the Battle of Loos in September 1915 after which the Division remained in that sector until it moved to the Somme in July 1916.  It was closely involved in attacks at High Wood during the period when Smith was killed but nothing specific is known about the circumstances of his death.
