| Circumstances of Death | Nothing is known about how Reid lost his life. The War Diary of 228 Coy MGC is not helpful as the only casualty recorded under 29th July is the wounding of a mule. The nearest casualties before the 29th occurred on the 27th when one OR was killed and another was wounded. Neither is named but it is possible that the man wounded on the 27th was Reid and he did not die until the 29th. He is believed to be buried at Essex Farm Cemetery where he is commemorated by a Special Memorial. Casualties from a nearby dressing station were buried there which may give some weight to the suggestion that Reid was not killed in action but died of wounds. The gravestones in the Glasgow Necropolis and Patna Cemetery both describe him as “fell in action” which is slightly ambiguous. | |
