Commissioned 2nd/Lt. in 7th (Blythswood) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry on October 20th 1914 (Seniority to date from November). Stationed Glasgow and Dunfermline in 1915. Promoted full Lieutenant in July 1917 with precedence from 1st June 1916. Stationed in Nyasaland, East Africa in 1916. Attached Kings African Rifles on February 8th 1917. Promoted Captain in Kings African Rifles in 1917.
