| Military Service | 1897 Joined the 4th Stirlingshire Volunteers (later the 7th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) as Second Lieutenant on 17th March 1898 Promoted Lieutenant 23rd March 1900 Promoted Captain 13th June 1911 Promoted Major 25th May 1914 Volunteered for Imperial Service on the outbreak of the European War in August 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from December. 1915 In the trenches near Ploegsteert Wood until April, when the battalion was moved near Ypres, where they took part in some severe fighting and several gas attacks; also in an attack across country in the face of the enemy’s machine-gun fire on 25th April. On 2nd May King led a charge through gas into one of our abandoned trenches, and he was one of the first to arrive there. At that moment the enemy were coming over their parapet to attack. He and some others at once turned the machine guns on the enemy, so that they were driven back, and the development of a large attack prevented. | |

| Circumstances of Death | He was wounded and gassed on 24th May during a heavy bombardment at the Second Battle of Ypres and taken to No.10 Casualty Clearing Station, Hazebrouck, where he died on 28th May. It was reported that at the time of his wounding “He was busily dressing some wounded men and encouraging the unwounded, when he was struck by shrapnel in two or three places.” | |
