John Alexander Jack
Rank | Private 200768 | |
Medals | British War Medal, Victory Medal
Regiment | Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), 5th Battalion
Military Service | Unusually it is not noted on Jack’s Medal Index card when he first served in a theatre of war but, as he was not awarded the 1914-15 Star, one assumes that he did not go until the first half of 1916. The 5th Cameronians, part of 19th Brigade, 33rd Division did not participate in the early actions of the Battle of the Somme. However on the 20th July they took part in an early morning attack on High Wood, part of the battle Bazentin. They captured most of the wood and held it against several German counter attacks until they were relieved on the evening of the 20th. Casualties were very heavy and Jack was amongst the 217 other ranks reported missing.
