Military Service

Crosbie enlisted in the 14th NZ Reinforcements (B Company) on 6th March 1916 at Trentham and was posted to the 11th Company of the 1st Battn Wellington Regiment. He sailed for England on 26th June 1916 on Troopship 56 ‘Maunganui’ and disembarked at Devonport on 22nd August. He was dispatched to France on 26th September and finally reached the front on 12th October 1916 as part of the reinforcements for 1st New Zealand Brigade of the New Zealand Division.
From this point on there are no details about Crosbie’s service. The Division fought in the latter parts of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. In 1917 the Division took part in the successful Battle of Messines (7-14th June) which Crosbie survived only to die in unknown circumstances later that month.

Born

20th January 1899, Glasgow.
This is the date given on Crosbie’s enlistment papers but the year is definitely wrong. According to census records he was born in 1891 just before the census of that year was taken.

Death26th June 1917
Circumstances of Death

Nothing is known about the circumstances of Crosbie’s death but the fact that he is commemorated on the Messine Ridge (NZ) Memorial strongly implies that he was posted missing and his body was never found or identified.
