Military Service | The 8th Battn Royal Scots was a Territorial battalion and it is possible Bremner was already serving with it when war was declared. The Battalion became the first Scottish Territorial battalion to make it overseas, crossing to France early in November 1914. It is not known whether Bremner was with them at that time but he was certainly serving by May 1915 when he was wounded during the Battle of Festubert on the 16th of the month. He did not return to the battalion until 16th January 1916. By the time he returned the Battalion had been designated a pioneer battalion and attached to the 51st (Highland) Division with which it spent the rest of the war. He makes few appearances in the Battalion’s War diary although he had a couple of bouts of illness in January and February 1917 which resulted in brief stays in hospital. | |
